CANTON, NY -- Richard Williams hit a jumper with one second remaining to lift St. Lawrence to a 61-60 Liberty League men's basketball victory at home over Union Saturday. The Dutchmen fell to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the league, while the Saints are now 4-7 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League.
Union led by three at 60-57 with 54 seconds remaining after a free throw by Jim Rahill (Buffalo, NY/Canisius). After a Union foul, St. Lawrence's Bela Vonnak converted two free throws with 40 seconds remaining to pull the Saints to within one, 60-59. Union missed a layup with eight seconds left and got he rebound, but St. Lawrence forced a turnover with seven seconds left. The Saints called a timeout with four seconds left to set up the eventual winning basket.
Senior guard Brian Scordato (Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley) led the Dutchmen with 22 points and six rebounds. Rahill finished with eight points and four steals and Chris Murphy (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY/Iona Prep) scored nine points and dished out four assists for the Dutchmen.
Williams finished with 10 points while Tyler Shaver had 14 points and three assists. Vonnak added 12 points for St. Lawrence, which trailed 28-24 at halftime.
Union shot 42% while St. Lawrence shot 49%, and the Saints had a 37-27 rebounding advantage for teh game. The Dutchmen have four straight home games at the Viniar Athletic Center starting with their next game, Friday, January 20 vs. league foe Hamilton at 8 p.m.
